Chapter 4
Sean''s face immediately paled upon hearing what the doctor had said.
The research team was in North City, about a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Marina City. Besides being home, I had never been away from Sean''s side for more than half an hour for the past two years due to the loss of eyesight.
When I exited the plane and took in the air of North City, I felt relieved. I was not sad at all.
Charles Chapman was the person who picked me up. He was a professor at Averton University, where I was his student.
"Welcome back, Rachel." Charles hugged me tightly. It had been two years, and he had aged quite a bit.
My eyes burned when I saw him. Emotions overwhelmed me. "Hello, Professor."
"I''m happy that you''re back. I had invited you two years ago to join our team, but too bad—"
"I''m sorry I let you down, Professor. I won''t do it again." I felt incredibly guilty.
"Did Sean not come with you?" Charles looked behind me.
My expression turned a little colder. "I broke up with him."
Charles was surprised to hear that since everyone knew how hard I had pursued Sean in university. Back then, I had turned down multiple international research opportunities for Sean, letting all my teachers down.
My schoolmates gossiped about me, too. They were not moved by what I deemed an action of love. They only thought that I was a simp.
Yet, I thought nothing of it back then. Thinking about it now, I was indeed quite pathetic.
"Great! It''s good that you''ve broken up with him! I never thought that he was the one for you. You should be rising like a shining star in the research world. A man who makes you give up everything isn''t worth it!"
Then, Charles turned to one of our colleagues and said, "Tell them not to leave a room for Sean. Don''t let him disturb us."
He told me that Sean had called him not long after my plane took off. He knew where I was because I did not take anything with me. Plus, I did not have many friends. It was only obvious where I could have gone to.
The team members on Charles'' team were my old schoolmates, so I quickly fit in. However, I had underestimated Sean''s abilities.
That night, he called my colleagues many times. After hanging up several times, I finally answered his video call.
Sean looked like he had aged quite a bit in one short day.
"Rachel. You… You''ve regained your eyesight?" He asked in a raspy voice.
I smirked. "Yes. When you brought Vivian to our home to sleep with her, I had already regained my eyesight. I saw everything."
Sean''s face paled instantly. His mouth gaped open.
"Rachel, why didn''t you tell me?"
"I wanted to surprise you, but I never thought you had a bigger surprise for me. Sean, it has been two years. You kept saying you love me, but it turns out that I''ve only been a joke to you and your mistress."
"No, Rachel. I love you. It''s just—"
"A momentary lapse of judgment, right? That''s what you wanted to say? Sean, how stupid do you think I am?"
Sean was at a loss for words.
I said, "But I am indeed a fool. I was a fool for rushing into the explosion to save you when you were fooling around with Vivian. You must have had fun playing me like a fool. We shouldn''t have gotten together at all!"
